| Biography: |
Dr. Steve Dawson graduated magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1974. He received his medical degree from Tufts University in 1978 and then completed his radiology residency and a two year post-doctoral fellowship in Interventional Radiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He has served as head of Abdominal Interventional Radiology at MGH and remains an active clinical Interventional Radiologist at MGH.
In 1993, Dr. Dawson and his surgical colleague, Dr. David Rattner, founded the Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology, CIMIT. CIMIT has grown to now include collaborations among the Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Draper Laboratories, and, most recently, Harvard Medical School. CIMIT now has over 200 participating employees and an annual budget of over $12 million.
In 1995, Dr. Dawson became interested in the possibilities for procedural medical training through computer-based simulations. Since that time, he has concentrated his research efforts in this area. In December 2000, the journal Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions published the first report of a simulator for interventional cardiology training, which Dr Dawson and colleagues from MGH and the Mitsubishi Research Laboratories developed. An accompanying editorial called the work ?a breakthrough of astonishing and revolutionary importance?. These simulators have trained over 8,000 physicians at the Guidant Cardiovascular Training Institutes in Brussels and Tokyo and other leading educational centers worldwide.
In recognition of his accomplishments and leadership, Dr Dawson and The SimGroup were awarded the first annual Edward M. Kennedy Award for Health Care Innovation in October, 2003. Other awards for Dr Dawson and his team include the 10th Annual Satava Award for visionary leadership in medical education and technology (2003), the Partners in Excellence Award (2004) and the Army's Top Ten Greatest Inventions Award in 2004, the first medical project ever to be so honored by the Defense Department. Dr Dawson was featured in an article in the May 2, 2005 issue of The New Yorker magazine. In 2005, VIRGIL, one of The SimGroup's simulation systems, was chosen to become part of the permanent collection at the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Washington, DC.
Dr Dawson holds faculty appointments at both Harvard Medical School (Associate Professor) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Visiting Scientist).
