DIGITAL SCREENING MAMMOGRAPY


Preparing for an Exam

  • Please bring your current insurance card and MGH blue card
  • Do not wear deodorant or powder because they will show up on the mammogram
  • Since you will need to undress from the waist up, a two piece outfit is recommended
  • If you have had a previous mammogram taken outside MGH, a complete interpretation will be expedited if you bring the films with you
  • Please let the technologist know IF:
    • receptionyou have NOT had a previous mammogram so they can explain the procedure to you
    • you have any scars on your breast
    • you have breast implants
    • you have skin irritations, particularly underneath your breast in the fold where the breast attaches to the chest

  • As you get older, your risk of breast cancer increases – more than 75% of breast cancers occur in women over 50
  • Most women diagnosed with breast cancer have no history of it in their family
  • Finding breast cancer early often means less surgery

Guidelines (from the American Cancer Society)

  • If you are 40 or over:
    • Mammogram every year
    • Breast exam by your doctor or nurse every year
    • Breast self-exam every month
  • If you are 20 to 39:
    • Breast exam by your doctor or nurse every three years
    • Breast self-exam every month
  • If you have a family history of breast cancer, talk with your doctor about how often and when you should have a mammogram.
