Facts About Radiation from Imaging Exams

To help you make the best decisions about diagnostic and follow-up imaging for your patients, Mass General Imaging wants to provide you with facts about CT radiation exposure.

Dose-reduction facts
  • Mass General Imaging is a world leader in the effort to minimize CT radiation dose.
  • Mass General Imaging has been active in dose reduction for over a decade.
  • Our physicians have published more than 100 academic papers on dose reduction.
  • Our doses are at minimum 30% lower–and as much as 95% lower–than reference levels used by the National Council on Radiation Protection.

Dose-reduction strategies

  • Collaborate among technologists, radiologists, and referring physicians.
  • Customization of scan parameters based on weight, age, history, and condition.
  • Technology improvements including scanners, image-processing techniques, and decision-support intelligence built into ROE.

Dashboards for Capital Planning

Capital Planning Dashboards
RCG can develop a database with a complete inventory of current equipment and associated productivity information. An equipment prioritization tool will be created based on useful life benchmarks, qualitative and quantitative measures from engineering, functional and safety standpoints; and expertise of both clinical and operational personnel to identify pressing needs and future opportunities.

The prospective approach focuses both on maintaining current base as well as investing in promising technology. It avoids the pitfalls of a capital planning process evaluated on a year-to-year basis by coordinating needs of all modalities and services over a multi-year horizon. With the larger picture in mind, this capital management model could optimize negotiations with equipment vendors.

Our researchers and doctors work closely with the scanner vendors to help define the next generation of equipment. We take advantage of improving technology such as smart scanners and advanced image-processing software. We exploit opportunities to apply information technology to improve quality and safety and to reduce costs.
