John Belknap has directed the Corporate Compliance Office at MGH for the past 7 years. In this capacity, Belknap is responsible for the development of an effective compliance program for the Hospital and its affiliated Physicians Organization. Part of his responsibility is to oversee regulatory visits to the Hospital.

Prior to his current position, John directed the Mass General Billing Compliance Office. Mr. Belknap established this office in 1998 to address the increased scrutiny of physician documentation and coding. The Mass General compliance program has developed a comprehensive auditing and educational approach for physicians and other clinicians. This compliance program is credited with significantly improving compliance accuracy rates and reducing the financial risks inherent in health care billing.

Mr. Belknap received his B.A. from the University of Vermont and his M.P.A from Northeastern University. In 2002 John and the MGH program received a Best Practice Award in the area of Physician Education and Monitoring and in 2010 a Best Practice Award for consolidating the Compliance Office with the Center for Quality and Safety, both from the Council of Ethical Organizations.
